Handmade Plush DollsI use a variety of materials for my plush dolls. Most are made from anti-pill fleece with acrylic felt for details such as faces and eyes. I prefer fleece for its sturdiness, resistance to fraying, and soft texture. I also use faux fur, cotton fabrics, and vinyl. I choose fabrics based on the look I'm going for. For example, I choose the faux fur I use for the Sushi monsters for its resemblance to a ball of rice. Most of my plush have plastic beads for eyes, and so they may not be suitable for small children as this can be a choking hazard. I like to use the beads to give the dolls a little bit of shine; I think it makes their faces seem more alive. Others feature felt or pop-pom face details. All the dolls are stuffed loosely with polyester fiberfill so they are very huggable and squishy. All dolls are made completely by me, including pattern drafting. All of them are machine sewn with hand-sewn details, mostly in the faces. The dolls range in size from approximately 6" (the ninjas) to about 20" (some of the monsters). Everyone gets a hug upon completion.
I like to make quirky yet endearing characters. I tend to focus on monsters because they give me so much freedom as far as appearance. No one knows what a monster looks like, so they can be anything and look like anything, even food. I go for simple silhouettes with a little flash in the details so you get a creature that is both comforting and fun. ![]() |
